It should be noted immediately that while the phrase ‘cross dressing’ itself does not imply a sexual element, for the purposes of this text we will use it interchangeably with the phrase transvestitism. We do respect that not all cross dressers practice the activity for sexual reasons, although within the context of defining the phrase from an erotic point of view, it should be characterized in this fashion.
Cross dressing can occur as a sexual activity for men or women; the only requirement that needs to be filled is the desire and action of dressing up in clothes that are reminiscent of the opposite gender for the purposes of acting out as that sex. For instance, while a girl in a relationship with a guy may decide to wear his T-shirt to bed, this is not considered cross dressing, as it isn’t for the pursuit of pretending to be a male. It should also be noted that the vast majority of cross dressing occurs when a man decides to wear the clothes of a woman.
Because the central aim of cross dressing is to feel and appear as the opposite sex, wearing heavily emphasized clothes of that gender’s nature is important. Women dressing up as men will likely wear suits, chunky watches, large shoes and other items of clothing that often denote the classic ‘male’ attire. As you would expect, men who dress up as women will likely wear sexy underwear, bras, skirts, dresses and high heels. Makeup is also a very common element of cross dressing within the male to female demographic.
Transvestites may experience their transition alone, as part of a sexual engagement or by playing the role of a submissive person in a BDSM relationship. While there is no direct requirement for an individual to want to live as a woman ‘full time’ in the practice of cross dressing, many people that are considering undergoing gender reassignment may desire to do so temporarily with cross dressing. It’s often used as a device of experimentation to see how the person would feel with the idea of always being the opposite gender.
Because of the implied nature of women being submissive parties in sexual engagements, men who cross dress will likely do so in a submissive context. Transvestites may enjoy having sex as the opposite gender and will quite regularly play the role of the receiver. Some men may also experience the scenario of cross dressing at the request of a dominatrix, who wishes to make them feel feminine and humiliated by changing their sexual identity.
