Bondage, also referred to by some people as ligotage, is the act of someone being tied up and restricted. In the broadest sense, bondage is able to be experienced by any person and administered by any person (even autonomous bondage is practiced by some) in a variety of different fashions using a variety of different materials. There are several reasons for bondage, although they all have the ultimate explanation in sexual gratification for the dominant and submissive individuals involved in the experience.
Bondage is typically engaged in with a dominant individual tying up their submissive subject. The most common forms of restriction involve bound arms and legs, typically in unnatural or somewhat uncomfortable ways to further the infliction of pain and apparent helplessness of the subject. These two elements of bondage are very important, as they both embody the experience of submission in strong, visual fashions.
The materials used for bondage can range to include pretty much anything that acts as a restrictive device. Belts, items of clothing and chains can be used for the purposes of bondage, although the most common materials are rope, duct tape and hand cuffs. Rope is likely to be the most popular in those that have a serious interest in BDSM. Nylon is considered to be the best material for rope as it is unlikely to leave burns or agitation that may result from other types of rope.
Bondage is typically followed by sexual activities, although this is not always the case and some people engage in what is described as decorative bondage. Decorative bondage is as the name suggests, a form of restriction where the individual is tied up to be looked at. This can be explored for photography or to simply use the submissive as a piece of art, either for a display to other people or personal enjoyment. In the former case, bondage may play a part in the niche of human furniture.
While enjoyable for all parties involved when practiced in the right fashion, bondage should be treated with quite a large deal of respect in terms of safety. Numerous concerns exist and problems can occur very quickly if not practiced in a safe fashion. Correct bondage should be researched beforehand and thoroughly understood by both parties: being able to get someone out of bondage is an important aspect in case issues arise and is considered to be the most essential element of any bondage experience that goes beyond basic engagement. Having a pair of scissors handy is recommended for safety reasons but should not be treated as a justification or excuse for not doing adequate research on correct bondage techniques.
